Externships/Job Shadowing

Program Overview

Does your company have its own formal externship program?

Please post the opporunity on CAVLink!

Externships allow employers to sponsor a U.Va. student for a job shadowing opportunity. Externships are volunteer experiences where the student can shadow one professional for a week or several employees throughout the week. This gives the student a chance to explore a career interest in a realistic environment outside of the classroom.

Students who participate are young people who excel academically and many are leaders among their peers. Since externships are non-compensatory, they attract motivated students who are committed to exploring career options and gaining experiences.

For over twenty-five years, students at U.Va. have been encouraged to explore job shadowing experiences in almost every career field imaginable. These experiences have been in fields as diverse as Arts Administration and Zoology.

How to Get Involved

Externships provide an excellent opportunity to help students develop the skills they need to secure internships and jobs upon graduation. You will hear directly from some of our most motivated students as they work to establish their own externships.

Externships may be scheduled during any time of the year that is convenient for both the student and the sponsor and can vary in length from one day to three weeks.

If you would like to inform students about an externship opportunity with your organization, please post your externship on CAVLink!

Please remember that students will contact you directly to apply for these externships.
