Internships: Parents Committee Internship Grants
Parents Committee Grants are awarded in the spring of each academic year and are intended to provide funds that support students who have secured unpaid public service internships. This year 16 grants of $3,000 each are available.
Previous Grant Recipients
Review a list of previous recipients, from summer 2005 to the present, to learn where they interned and how they spent their summers.
Grants are open to current 2nd and 3rd year undergraduate students at the University of Virginia, regardless of academic field of study. Students must have secured an internship in order to apply. Other requirements include:
- Interns are expected to work 30-40 hours per week for 8-10 weeks.
- Interns must be enrolled at least one semester after the end of the internship.
- Interns agree to keep an online journal throughout the course of their summer internship (3 entries including final evalaution).
- Interns must complete a written evaluation of the completed internship highlighting their accomplishments, their personal growth, and how the experience has affected their future career expectations.
- If you are applying for funding for the same internship from other sources, please note that you may accept only one grant.
Please note that these funds are for unpaid internships only - not summer research positions or formal placement programs requiring you to pay to complete the internship. For grants for research positions, contact the Center for Undergraduate Excellence (http://www.virginia.edu/cue/scholarships.php). Previous grant recipients meeting the application requirements are encouraged to apply for grants again. However, if you are returning to the same internship site, your application should indicate how this experience will be different from your previous internship and how you will further enhance yourself and/or the organization by a second internship experience.
Please note, as well, that if your internship site location appears on the U.S. Department of State travel warning list (http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/tw/tw_1764.html), you will be ineligible to receive a Parents Committee Grant. UCS cannot fund an internship in a place where you would be at risk of being harmed.
A university faculty and staff committee will select Parents Committee Internship Grant recipients based on two primary criteria: (1) the quality of the applicant’s application, resume and essays; and (2) the degree to which the internship supports any of the five areas of public concern as defined by the Virginia 2020 Commission:
- Civic engagement and public policy
- Economic and business development
- Education, both K-12 and lifelong learning
- Environment, both planned and natural
The University of Virginia is committed to equal employment opportunity and affirmative action. To fulfill this commitment, the university administers its programs, procedures and practices without regard to age, color, disability, marital status, national or ethnic origin, political affiliation, race, religion, sex (including pregnancy), sexual orientation, veteran status, and family medical or genetic information and operates both affirmative action and equal opportunity programs, consistent with resolutions of the Board of Visitors and with federal and state requirements, including the Governor's Executive Order Number One (2014).
The deadline for the application will be 12:00 pm on Monday, March 30, 2015. It is strongly advised to have your resume and application reviewed before they are submitted. UCS counselors are available to assist with reviewing your application materials.
Terms and Conditions
Parents Committee Internship Grant recipients must complete the entire internship described in their application materials. Failure to complete the internship will be considered a material breach of the program requirements subjecting the student to forfeiture or repayment of the scholarship funds. Exceptions to the forfeiture/repayment requirement will be granted only in extreme and unusual circumstances as determined by the Parents Committee Internship Grant Selection Committee in its sole discretion. These funds are awarded for the internship described in your Parents Committee Internship Grant application and may not be transferred to any other internship.
You may receive individual assistance from a career advisor in reviewing your grant application or learning about internship resources in general. Contact UCS at (434) 924-8900 to schedule an appointment.
