PreHealth Advising

Foremost among PreHealth opportunities at the University is the challenging academic program. Students may select any major (medical schools have no preference) and still have time for elective courses. However, medicine and other health fields are taught as scientific disciplines, and prospective students must prove their strength in science. For premeds, this means the required medical school admission requirements—two semesters each, with laboratory, of Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biology, and Physics. Other requirements such as English and Math are not the same for every medical school. We recommend that premeds consult the current Medical School Admission Requirements for specific requests made by individual schools. For students interested in health professions other than medicine, the basic four sciences are usually just the beginning; for additional requirements, these prospective applicants should consult the admission publications of the professional organization overseeing their respective interest.

Beyond the classroom, students are encouraged to become an active member of the PreHealth community at U.Va.. Such involvement includes joining one of five PreHealth student groups on grounds, where one is likely to find peers who enjoy discussing their shared professional passion in a non-competitive, and often social, atmosphere. In addition, research opportunities can be found through the Biology and Chemistry Departments or the U.Va. School of Medicine. Externships are another smart option—one-week shadowing experiences where students observe physicians or other health care professionals. Lastly, there are numerous volunteer programs available through the Medical Services division of Madison House, the University’s volunteer coordinating organization. All health professional schools expect applicants to have a meaningful background in clinical volunteering.
