Local Volunteer Opportunities

The Legal Aid Justice Center: The Legal Aid Justice Center offers civil legal services to low-income families throughout Central Virginia and to low wage immigrant workers statewide, while also engaging in systematic legal advocacy for all low-income Virginians. Through legal representation, community education, and statewide advocacy, the Legal Aid Justice Center works both to eliminate the immediate symptoms and to address the underlying causes of poverty in Virginia.

Court Appointed Special Advocates: CASA is an organization that trains Court Appointed Special Advocates, who work one-on-one with abused and endangered children to assist the courts in determining the best environment to ensure each child's safety and well-being. Volunteer court advocates may be the only voice that can truly speak for these children.

The Rutherford Institute: Founded in 1982 by constitutional attorney and author John W. Whitehead, The Rutherford Institute is a civil liberties organization that provides free legal services to people whose constitutional and human rights have been threatened or violated.

Southern Environmental Law Center: SELC is the leading environmental organization dedicated solely to protecting the natural resources of the South. Founded in 1986, SELC has grown into a multi-faceted organization that is leading broad-based conservation initiatives to strengthen environmental protection laws and policies. Through direct legal action, policy reform, public education and partnerships with more than 100 other groups, SELC is playing a major role in setting the environmental future of the South.

Charlottesville City Attorney’s Office: The Charlottesville City Attorney’s Office gives advice to and represents the City as a corporate entity, its City Council, the City Manager, the Airport Authority, the Charlottesville Industrial Development Authority, the Charlottesville Redevelopment and Housing Authority, the Planning Commission, the Retirement Commission, and all City departments and employees.



Student Groups

Oliver Hill Prelaw Society: The purpose of this organization is to develop and preserve the interest of minority students in legal careers.

Patrick Henry Law Society: PHLS is an organization at the University of Virginia whose purpose is to provide students with opportunities to listen to and interact with lawyers, judges, legal historians, and legal theorists.

Phi Alpha Delta Pre-Law Fraternity: The purpose of this chapter shall be to provide an effective, cohesive forum, smaller than that of the entire law school student body; to provide for the professional advancement of its members; to promote the principles of liberty and equal justice under law for all citizens; to stimulate excellence in scholarship; to provide a forum for the interchange between members of this chapter and members of the practicing bar, the bench, and law professors; to develop lasting professional friendships among its members; and to promote the ideals, principles, and purposes of Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity, International as defined in Article II of the Constitution of the Fraternity.

Collegiate Mock Trial Team: The Collegiate Mock Trial Team at UVa is a wonderful way to learn trial procedure, some basics of law, and the federal rules of evidence, among other things. Tryouts for the team are held at the beginning of fall semester. It is also possible to join the team at a later date in the academic year if space is still available.

The Jefferson Society: The Jefferson Society is the oldest student organization at the University of Virginia and is composed of students from throughout the University's many schools. Founded in 1825, the Society has a long tradition of literary and oratorical excellence. Its list of former members includes such notables as Edgar Allan Poe, Woodrow Wilson, James Madison, James Monroe, Marquis de Lafayette, John Casteen,and Governor James Gilmore. Even today, the Society attracts the University's best and brightest student leaders.
