Career Peer Educator Application Process

University Career Services (UCS) seeks highly motivated individuals to promote and educate the U.Va. community about UCS resources and programming. Career Peer Educators (CPEs) will serve as UCS goodwill ambassadors and as providers of valued career outreach support for fellow students.

Responsibilities

UCS Resource Library

  • Actively welcome students who visit UCS Library; recommend print resources, share information about upcoming career programming/workshop activities.
  • Assist students with on-line resources such as CAVLink, UCAN alumni database, Optimal Resume, etc.

Outreach

  • Use your creativity to assist with the marketing of major career fairs, career workshops and programming efforts.
  • Initiate new and innovative ways to increase student use of UCS programs and resources.
  • Conduct presentations for students groups on topics such as choosing a major, resume writing, internship search resources, and navigating a career fair.

Program Support

  • Help prepare for and staff large scale events such as career fairs and open houses.

Training

Two all-day training sessions are held each year (one at the beginning of each semester). Training includes: learning about the career development model, UCS print and online resources, the employer/career services relationship and the process of building positive peer interactions. In-service training sessions continue throughout the year during regularly scheduled meetings and cover topics such as business etiquette, networking and public speaking.

Terms

CPEs will be expected to volunteer an average of 5 hours per week from August-May (excluding breaks and holidays). Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required.

Qualifications

Applicants should be current first, second and third years (fourth years who are scheduled to complete a fifth year through the teaching education program are also eligible).

Skills

Candidates should possess strong written and verbal communication skills, interprsonal skills, organizational skills, ability to work as part of a team as well as independently, enthusiasm for peer education, creativity, and the initiative to learn new information.
